Naan (flatbread) - cooking

In the Hindi language, naan (नान) means 'flatbread'. The Persian language uses the word 'naan' (نان‎ ) for all bread. This is an easy recipe for a flatbread 'naan' , that originates from India. Indian food is very popular in the United Kingdom. We often eat naan with a curry or a daal (lentil dish).

This recipe comes from Arman Liew's blog.

Time: 5 minutes
Makes: 4-6 naan, depending on their size

Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 cups flour (we use one and 1/2 small coffee cups, because we don't have a measuring jug)
  • 1 cup greek yogurt (we used the 150g Elinas Greek-style yoghurt from Billa)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp baking powder (if you have self-raising flour, you don't need this)
  • Oil
  Optional:
  • Coriander
  • Butter
  • Garlic

Method

Mix all the ingredients in a mixing bowl, until they form a dough. It is a bit difficult, but if you squeeze them together, it works.

Cut the dough into 4-8 pieces. You can choose how big they are.

Roll the pieces quite thin. Use your fingers to spread some oil on each side. Put them in a hot, dry frying pan. Cook them for around 3 minutes on each side.

Eat the bread hot with your meal. If you want, you can put chopped garlic, butter, and coriander on the top of the bread.
